Study Reveals Critical Challenges for Kansas Disability Caregivers

A recent University of Kansas study has highlighted the pressing challenges facing families caring for individuals with intellectual disabilities across the state. The findings paint a sobering picture of caregiver burnout and extended waiting periods for essential services.

Key Challenges Facing Families

The study reveals that an overwhelming 86% of caregivers provide their services without compensation, while some families shoulder additional financial burdens of up to $1,000 monthly in caregiving expenses. Perhaps most concerning is that one in five families have no backup caregiver available, leaving them without a safety net for their loved ones' care.

The current intellectual developmental disability (IDD) waiver system, designed to provide crucial support services, faces a staggering 10-year waitlist. This delay has created significant hardships for families, with some individuals either aging out or, tragically, passing away before receiving needed assistance.

The Scope of Care Needed

The research identifies several critical areas where support is most needed:

  • 84% require community-based assistance

  • 74% need help at home

  • 68% require workplace support

Half of the caregivers report using work leave to provide care, with a quarter taking unpaid time off, highlighting the economic impact on families.

Moving Toward Solutions

State officials, including Rep. Will Carpenter (R-El Dorado), are using the study's findings to inform policy decisions. The state is developing a new program to address the waitlist, though it will require federal approval. Mike Burgess, director of policy and research at the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, expressed optimism that with continued legislative focus, the waitlist could be eliminated within a few years.
